The forests surrounding the Puget Sound in North America are dominated by conifer forest punctuated by wetlands, deciduous riparian forest, and anthropomorphic prairie. Fire is uncommon, but can be catastrophic during dry climate cycles. Agriculture is strongly limited by summer water availability. Soils are typically young, acidic due to rainfall, and not derived from phosphorus or calcium rich rock. Much of the region was covered by glaciers 10-15,000 years ago.

Puget Lowland Forest ecoregion is immediately north of and shares many qualities in common with the Willamette Valley Forest ecoregion.
